Our CommunityFounded in 2008, Capitol Hill Aikikai is in the Capitol Hill district of Washington, D.C. We are a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the teaching and development of Aikido and are affiliated with the United States Aikido Federation.
We are an informal and welcoming club. We have a core group of regulars and a growing group of newer students, many of whom have become friends. We hope you get a chance to read an excellent article about us in the Hill Rag by Paul Rivas: Aikido Brings Harmony to Life.

Some Reasons To Do Aikido
Aikido is a self-defensive, non-competitive martial art. In terms of its martial application, one of the fundamental concepts in Aikido is to blend with an attack and redirect its energy to either throw or pin the attacker. Ideally, neither the attacker or the person being attacked is hurt.
Aikido can help you deal with conflict in everyday life. Aikido can help you learn sensitivity to other people and develop confidence. We teach you to be safer and be more in control of yourself, your reactions, and your life. Aikido helps you be more aware of what's happening and what's possible. We teach you to protect yourself but not to insist on a particular, preselected end point.
Aikido offers health benefits. The workout can be as aerobic as you want. Aikido also helps improve your balance, flexibility and coordination. Plus, Aikido is fun, which is good for your health!
Meet Us and Watch or Try a Few Classes
Don't worry if you haven't done Aikido before. We were all beginners once and we all like introducing new people to Aikido and our community. Total beginners are welcome to all classes; simply show up! No experience or skills are needed. The instructors tailor every class to the levels of the people who attend. Our students find our instruction both nurturing and challenging. Dress in comfortable loose-fitting workout clothes, such as a t-shirt and sweatpants. (If you already have a martial arts uniform, that would be ideal.) We have a changing area.
Your first classes are free. If you join, dues are $60 per month. We do not require a long term commitment or contract.
Location and Times
We are located in Washington, D.C., at the Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church at 201 4th Street SE (the corner of 4th St. and Independence Ave., SE). Regular classes are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 7 PM to 9 PM. Please check the Class Schedule and Dojo Calendar because some weeks have fewer classes. (There is no class on holidays or days federal government offices are closed.)
When coming to class, you may generally park for free after 6 PM in the parking lot of the National Capital Bank (enter the lot via the driveway between the church and the bank on the corner and park behind the church).
- Any day is a good day to try Aikido. We work to help all students and all visitors get something from any class.
- After class, we sometimes go out for dinner and drinks.
- Wednesday classes and are focused on fundamentals.
- Classes the week of the 3rd Wednesday each month generally involve wooden sword or staff techniques.
